"Some positive news re Yamakoshi"

LAST EDITED ON 26-Oct-04 AT 01:46 PM ((BST))

Folks

I've just spoken to Koiette who had just spoken to Geoff Kemp in Japan. {edit: Geoff is back from Japan}

I can provide the following info:

Fujio Oomo
Bulk of the fish OK
Broodstock OK
Half of the tosai OK
Majority of tategoi OK
Power will be restored tomorrow
Generators now running filters
Expects to be able to ship in 3-4 weeks

Kaneko
All sold fish are OK
All of their best stocks are OK

Yagenji
Best fish house damaged but brothers working around the clock to fix.
Best stocks and sold koi are OK

Maraju Tanaka
Half of tosai are OK
Half of tategoi are OK
All big fish OK

Generally expect power in the area to be restored within 1 week.

All the family members of the above breeders are OK.

Its very annoying that unfortunately our news people do not seem to think this is worth reporting considering some of the rubbish they do show.

I keep looking about the net for updates and as you say Mark its all very mixed opinions at the moment.

We can but hope

I think part of the problem is the age-old one of generalising.

We should deal with each news item as it stands without trying to read too much into it and make 2 + 2 = 5.

We should quarantine each snippet and keep it in isolation.

The news from Mushigame and Yamogihara isn't contradictory if you keep it that way. These two villages are on the sides of the same mountain. You can drive from one to the other in about 25 minutes.

But there the similarity stops. Mushigame is a small village, 120+ houses with an aged population. They closed the school a couple of years ago as there weren't enough kids to keep it viable.

Yamogihara is bigger and is thriving. The first time I visited there was a Koi show on the forecourt of a car showroom.

Yamogihara is expecting the electricity to be reconnected in the next couple of days.

Mushigame has been evacuated and will now be low on the list.

Even in Yamogihara its a case of different strokes for different folks. Oomo, has been lucky, Nogami, hasn't. They are not that far apart.

Let's just keep it factual and deal with each piece of news as it comes and avoid speculation. It's bad enough without making it worse.

To put it all in perspective the news here is full of stories of a young mother with two kids aged 2 and 3 missing. The front of their car has been found sticking out of the mud in a landslide.

The 2 year old son has been rescued and airlifted to hospital.

The 3 year old girl is still trapped.

The mother's pulse has been lost.

Sadly the Kyodo news website now confirms the loss of another life due to the quake as the 39 year old mother trapped in her car as been confirmed as dead. I believe that takes the toll to at least 32.
