There's quite an interesting little story regarding the maruten sanke which took Mature Champion that I'll recount.During the judging on Friday myself and Steve Gibbins sat with Saito San (Shintaro) during a break in his work and were flicking through the Koi sheets he had for judging.
Both myself and Steve picked our favourites from the 70bu Sanke, there were perhaps 20 or so to choose from in the pics. The ones we chose were in the top 4, that was quite clear to see from the pics.
Saito San took us to show us the Koi which was ichi ban (number one), it was this maruten sanke.
Both myself and Steve expressed concerns with the beni on the Koi being a little weak, Saito San insisted that is was absolutely no problem. He stated that this Koi was the same as Shintaro Koi, that I could understand from seeing the Koi he'd harvested in October and November whilst I was in Japan.
Later in the afternoon when the winning Koi were being moved to their respective vats Steve turned to me and said, 'that Sanke Saito San showed us is over there'.
Not only was it judged as best Sanke in size it had then gone on to beat every other Koi from 50cm - 70cm in size at the show, that's a lot of Koi, quite probably the most competitive prize to win.
