"So what variety could this be?"

Hi everyone,

Was at Jim Court's (Mustang) this morning and took some pictures of some of his Koi. One in particular has always impressed me, but I haven't the faintest what variety it would be classified as. So perhaps some of you more educated people could let Jim and myself know.

Regards, Bob

Thanks Bob,

Then I'd go for a Beni-kikuryu with a Doitsu Kin-Hi-Showa as an alternative.

Dear all,

Sorry to burst any bubbles but it cannot be any type of Goshiki as their is no 'robing present'. I would go with Bernie as the nearest variety being a doitsu kin showa. Having said that I believe you have a mixture of more than one variety their (going by the sumi). At a show it would (subject to being metalic) be benched Hikari Utsuri. This proves that any koi even one without a recognised variety can go to a show and be entered.

HAPPY KOI KEEPING

Years ago one of the Japanese magazines carried a section called:
a unique koi'someone saw somewhere'this was a favourite of mine as it showed some stunning koi, presumably they are koi that get through the many culls even when not a recognised variety.Maybe Koicarp magazine
could be persuaded to suss out some of these pictures, sure to be of much interest. The one above is a great example.

The Koi is approx. 45cm/18" and was purchased quite a bit smaller than this from Just Koi. I was there when Jim bought it and it was the day we met approx 18 months ago. We both liked it, Jim had it bowled and purchased it - I dont think it was a King's ransom either. Has grown on well and looks really stunning, as many of you have noticed on these pictures. I'm sure it would look even better if the pictures were taken by someone like Mark.

Just goes to show that if you see something you like - buy it before someone else does (kicking myself!)!

Perhaps Mark will remember it and also remember what breeder it came from.

   Bob

I remember the koi well, it was part of the first lot of koi that came to us, 6th December 2003, if memory serves me right.

In Wigan pre visit to EA tomorrow so don't have all records to hand.

It was part of a mixed 'hikari moyo' box which we had via Toru Inouye of Far East Enterprises in Japan. I guess when it came in it was 21-23cm.

I think all the koi, including this one, were pretty much sold at cost. This for no other reason than the koi didn't 'excite' me particularly. Of the koi this was probably always my number 1, indeed i'm confident i said as such to you guys. I also recall being asked, certainly by Jim and probably others there at the time, what would it 'do'. My response was as i recall, 'sorry, ain't got a clue', because i genuinely didn't, no point bigging it up only to disappoint.

I am pleased that the 'beni' appears to have stayed clean, in fact perhaps cleaned up since it was purchased. I'll try to find some pics of it.

I'm interested in references to 'doitsu kin showa' by bern and gary, why? There is no white present, is there? If we are down that line then we are surely looking doitsu kin ki utsuri??

I guess we are down the kikokuryu type somewhere.

All that said i think it would, from the pics, attract attention in hikari moyo/utsuri (geez split that one 'benchers').

Personally, for my reconning, it would be 100% hikari moyo, not hikari utsuri.

Thanks for all the info Mark. Is Toru Inouye a breeder or middle man/dealer?

Certainly a striking Koi now, have to get you to take some pictures of it one day, do it some real justice.

Hi Mark,

I said Doitsu Kin-Hi-Showa i.e. a metalic Hi-Showa - predominantly red. Which was based mainly on the fact that I can see gin around the mouth in the second picture.

But that was my second choice. The beni kikuryu was my first.

Mark,

I thought I saw white on the nose of the koi and on the rear left handside from the photo's hence the showa as opposed to utsuri reference. I have doubts about the sumi even viewed through a metalic sheen. If however you know where the koi came from then I will accept your diagnosis.

HAPPY KOI KEEPING
